At the recent IT Roadmap conference in Washington D.C. there was a panel discussion about how the younger generation uses tools such as texting to stay in touch with friends. One of the implications of the discussion was that the younger generation is more facile with collaboration than is the current workforce.

Do Collaboration Tools Enable Collaboration?

The authors make a *huge* point, "Is this really collaboration or is it running away form collaboration?"
There will *never* be a better way to collaborate than face-to-face. When you find yourself in the unenviable situation of having to collaborate with someone with whom you *can* not have a face-to-face conversation, then collaboration tools may help. MAY!
But they must be rich enough to convey the spectrum of information that is needed in the situation. The authors mentioned that a tweet is a "simplex" communication, and they pointed to telepresence as being much richer.
The key to making these things work for you is to be clear about the type and level of interaction that is needed in any particular situation - then adopt the communication mode that is best suited to it.
Sometimes that means getting up from your desk and looking someone in the eye!
