I have to agree with the previous poster. If Amazon were really doing that kind of volume, they'd be screaming about it in the press.

I think you are both right. If AWS was doing this kind of volume from individual distinct users, they'd be talking about it as much as possible, so there's doubtless some overlap and overbuying by single-entity users. But even if you discount the order of magnitude, it's a ton of AMIs provisioned on EC2 vs. VMs on IDC's shipped server number. To me the takeaway from this excellent analysis is that it's easy to see how server underutilization and license inflexibility are the number 1 and 2 reasons IBM cites for demand for their cloud services, esp around test & dev -- we at IDC hear the same from our customers.
