I've had good results with http://www.aceproject.com . It's free for up to 5 users. It has Gantt charts, timesheets and many features. Even better, it's web-based.
A table comparison of the products would be most helpful.
Would have liked to see some screen shots of the applications. Remember that any visuals tell a story more instantly than a lot of text. ;-)
Hm, I find that PM is so much more than a chart - microtool inStep - Java based - free for individual users (even business use), charging for team usage, covers the whole PRINCE2 (kind of European PMbok) and more....

I've had a lot of luck with Pelotonics project management software
The free version allows you to create two projects and add an unlimited amount of users for collaboration. Since it is web-based, it is easy to share projects with others. I've found a good use for it in the few clubs and organizations I'm involved in. Since members are not always close geographically, we can collaborate on projects easily.
It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a MS Project, but some of those bells and whistles are just fluff anyway.
We use ZCOPE (www.getzcope.com) which has a free version as well - good for agile pm (and no Gantt charts).
Hi. I used a lot the dotproject solution. Very usefull for a collaborative aproach to update proyect status. Drawbacks: You need to instal a linux server to host the software. Check http://www.dotproject.net
ONE
Let us remember:
1) Software tools contribute 5% to the success of any project,
and
2) "A fool with a tool, is still a fool" = (if you don't know the process of project management, including comprehensive analysis of your key stakeholders as individual people to successfully manage their expectations, the opportunity for a successful project is low). Project managers should not spend a lot (too much) of time flying (or learning how to fly) software.

A colleague shared this article with me. Thank you for taking the time to write comprehensive analysis' on these open-source applications. I'm relatively new to project management, so I took your advice and went through Gantter.com's tutorial and it helped tremendously. I ended up choosing OpenProj.
Thank you again!
I have used Openproj. I would have loved to continue using it but had to move back to MS project. If you have a mid to large project plan, the system gets very slow and somewhat buggy. It became frustrating to use and began to slow the project down while waiting for the screen to update when a task was a predecessor for other tasks.
I hope they can speed up the code and remove the bugs because Openproj has all of the features to make it a project killer.
