Google Wave: A New Kind of Mega-Application

Google's newly unveiled Wave may be called a communication and collaboration tool, but it's much more than that. Wave combines key Web trends from the last couple of years into one elegant application. And it may make today's enterprise tools such as Microsoft SharePoint look ridiculously complicated.

I love high tech business news like this!

It sounds like Google Wave is going to be a one-stop-shop for communication, which will incorporate a variety of different mediums.

A very exciting tool and I'm looking for forward to trying i out.

Although very powerful looking I do wonder what kind of data mining and archival capabilities will be enabled for enterprise use? As well as, the data privacy structures that would be required for some organizations to use a tool like this??
Like any of the communications tools, individuals need to be increasingly aware of their liability for data sharing issues as regulations and policies continue to change.
If Google offers this for free, I assume they will be mining the information to identify networks and patterns. After all, they are a search company at heart.

Sounds all very good but one of the things that projects' documentation requires is the seal of approval at different stages and by different people, normally handled with Workflows. Would Wave have routing and approval technology to meet this requirement?

worldcitizin09 Mon, 2009-06-01 12:32

The problem I see is data and communication integrity with such a tool because Google is known for analyzing data which is done already through Gmail accounts. To be utilized across companies, this would be a long reach due to many reasons, especially the integrity of corporate networks and data security.

I've noticed several articles about Wave. They all say the same thing with the same graphic. That tells me it's all from a press release. I'm surprised at CIO prominantly featuring a story from a press relese. You should do your own research and article, not Google's.

RE: anonymous. I'm sorry you feel that way, but I assure you I did much more than read a press release. I was at the event in person, and had the opportunity to speak with some of my most trusted sources to inform my analysis before I wrote this overview.

HIPAA HIPAA HIPAA - for anyone in healthcare we have to worry about HIPAA!

CW Wed, 2009-06-03 16:31

While the early versions of Wave may not meet some enterprise requirements for data and security, it's still opening up a new format for communication that I suspect won't go away so easily.

There will be new iterations as we go forward and this will change the way people work. Once you give people the ability to collaborate, either internally or if they do it externally, they won't go back to the old ways. And since people who collaborate together are more productive, isn't that what we really want in the long run?

At my agency, our CIO is making every effort to get the IT office up to speed with the times and ahead of the curve with respect to our user community. She's big into using social networking and collaboration tools. We're doing a lot of testing right now to see what's likely to work with our users; and we'll likely test this one as well if it comes out before a decision is made. I'm thrilled to read this article and thrilled to work in a place where bosses encourage employees to experiment with new and emerging tech trends -- with an view towards implementing as much as possible, even with a limited budget.

Well said Sir. While many of us have thought for some time that Google would eventually dislodge MSFT from the enterprise there was a question of how to definitively beat Outlook. From a Business perspective Gmail is easier to use, less expensive, and has more useful integrated features (i.e. video chat) but obviously the Exchange Admin will tell everyone differently. At the end of the day all the user hears is 'email' and email is email - they don't understand the differences and from their perspective the pain of change is greater than the pain to the business since they don't see the 'cost of legacy client/server software/hardware and dozens of IT FTEs' coming out of their paycheck - but that cost does indeed hit everyone's paycheck. Wave is the platform that definitely beats Office, SharePoint, InfoPath, Excel, Windows Server, and Outlook. Many questioned Google's culture of innovation before monetization, but Wave not only beats Outlook, it also replaces Gmail since it in effect renders a stand-alone email app as relatively useless - few companies would have been so bold. If Google would have tried to compete against Office 1 on 1 we would have seen limited innovation, instead they took a true scientific approach and looked at the issues faced by people working together to accomplish any task and asked what we should have, not what we do have. Wave will be as central to the enterprise of tomorrow as Office is today. The best aspect of Cloud Computing is the ability to put people and business before IT. People should always come first. Wave is an absolute grand slam for Google and the global economy.
