Great tips. When you take into consideration the corporate policies and governance rules unique to every organization, there will be an array of hybrid approaches as large companies explore all the possibilities. For enterprises with a large inventory of underutilized IT resources or business-critical applications, private clouds are the safer bet as the starting point -- both from a security and reliability perspective. This can give IT the opportunity to transform into more of an internal service provider, i.e., putting the right workload on the right infrastructure today while creating gateways to migrate some applications to the public cloud in the future. A hybrid private/public cloud is a good solution for Enterprise IT because it gives the organization the best of both worlds - combining an internal cloud for mission critical, security-sensitive or data-intensive application workload, while leveraging the external cloud for less mission-critical workloads in peak usage periods.

Good article. Thanks.
I'm quite deep already into what you call Private Virtual Clouds with my company LegalCloud.
We are an off-premise/on-premise hybrid private community cloud (say that 5 times fast) offering a variety of IT services in a utility model.
It's been very interesting because it's a cloud enterprise class effort so much of the work I've done in the past for more web site related cloud work, while applicable, is simply applied differently.
In any event, this is definitely the way things are headed for many enterprises. It will take some time though.
