VMware and ISVs Including Marathon Square Off on Fault Tolerance

Hardware fault tolerance and software fault tolerance are not created equal, no matter how much VMware and Marathon would have you believe. The point of fault tolerance, after all, is supporting critical applications. Software FT does not scale beyond a single processor core. It has latency and overhead issues. Hardware problems are not root-caused, leaving them to be repeated over and over. It requires multiple identical physical servers. Transient errors are easily propagated across the network. And, in the case of Marathon, it only supports Windows. That’s minimalist fault tolerance, at best. What can be done on hardware – industry-standard hardware – will always perform better than software emulation of the same features. End users should ask why these vendors are not telling them about these limitations.
