Two big pieces of news last week: VMware expanded its desktop virtualization strategy and released a set of management APIs for its ESXi (free) hypervisor. Here's what it means to you.
The API has always been there, it used to be read only. As of 3.5 U3 it is read/write available, but this was unintentionally. I talked with the productmanager and it will be closed down again soon:

Something that I have always wondered was why there wasnt a stronger elasticity application for VMware, kindof like Ritescale. This API might make homespun versions of that more possible, or maybe as the article mentions, an open source one could be enabled to manage VMware, like evolution.
By far, the most exciting component of the View 3 release is the View Composer. Borrowing the “linked clone” approach from tools such as Lab Manager and Stage Manager, the View Composer allows IT administrators to utilize their storage with more intelligence. The best part is the ease of management from a patch and ongoing maintenance perspective. Rather than patching 100 Virtual Desktop base disks, I simply need to patch 1 (assuming the 100 desktops stem from one single base).
