Microsoft's Windows Vista OS continues to be dogged by a bad reputation, but some recent security reports give it an edge over Windows XP. And some users say security is precisely why they didn't skip Vista.
Firstly:
Security through obscurity...
Secondly:
Some of us don't have the budget to just try. Tight budget not tight time frame.
That aside the search feature is a plus.
"Microsoft's recent Security Intelligence Report shows..."
"In addition, veteran Microsoft blogger Ed Bott recently ran some numbers..."
"Another security report... by Jeff Jones, Security Strategy Director in the Microsoft Security Technology Unit, cites that..."
Seriously? Is this what you call reporting? All three of your "studies" come from Microsoft sources. *sniff, sniff* Smells like shill to me.
"....endless debate (by internal microsofties) over the metrics ...."
puhhhhleeeeeeze
enough already, can we move on now?
With all due respect to Mr. Noles and Kinex Medical Center, I have lived in Waukesha for the past 22 years, I am involved in the local IT community with itSMF and ISACA, and I have never heard of this company before. 90 desktops is a drop in the bucket for most corporations. This is not representative of the IT industry's position on Vista.
Also, has anyone questioned whether Microsoft is giving security the same effort in XP as in Vista? That would certain skew numbers in favor of Vista.
Each enterprise needs to evaluate its own needs to determine whether a particular platform is right for it.
It is a waste of CIO power to participate in provider bashing. If you have a specific reason for your decision, share it if you believe that will help others. Otherwise, just go about your business.
Vista is working out great at my organization. I decided to invest in the future not the past.
Guys,
The numbers of PC's and Laptops in both of these examples are tiny. In one case the roll out seems to have a 12 month horizon Sept 2009. The search and security features may be far out weighted by the big navigation changes - I still hate the way they have moved all the settings.
Can we get some "real" implementations of scale - no offence intended guys - so that we can see what this roll out is like for say 10,00 PC's.... Please....
Comments are interesting (I just wonder they are paid by Microsoft's competitors.) I think Vista may be a good hardvard business case material in terms of the impact of negative perceptions since a release of a product to a company.
Anyway, I found the article is providing some data points to consider in decision making. Buyers are likely to consider both arguments in decision making, trying to be less emotional but more rational "what's in for me". By the way, pesonally I have been using both Mac and PC. I upgraded my PC OS to Vista about a year ago. Yes, there have been some challenges. But, at the same time, I have had many challenges with Mac too; just different areas (I recently ditched Mac and replaced this Mac with a PC with Vista.) I just would like to let you know that I am not paid by any of these companies. I am sure other people have different opinions and perspectives, and love to hear them because they will help me make a better decision.
