The warning against virtualizing at the same time is sensible - it's a lot of complexity. However, if you switch the order, things can get a lot easier. My company did a very successful migration by virtualizing first, and then using the mobility capabilities of the virtual platform to transfer the workload across to new hardware in the new data centre.

Having run a number of Data Centre relocations and consolidations I completely agree with all five points. However to fully reap the benefits you have to overcome these challenges.
My advise, you must have the application owners and support teams full support in the project, they are the ones who have to make the apps work, wherever or whatever the hardware.
- For IP address re-allocation they will need to describe all dependencies and rule out any change impacting service.
- Most virtualisation issues are not related to relocation, they are related to the re-hosting. You need your virtual platform mature before using it for production, relocation or not.
