RIM BlackBerry Storm vs. iPhone 3G: 8 Reasons to Pick the Storm

With the new BlackBerry Storm set to hit U.S shelves next week, many smartphone enthusiasts looking to go the touch screen route will soon have to make a decision between RIM's first touch device and the popular iPhone 3G. In this second installment of a two-part series we offer up eight reasons to embrace the Storm.

This is a very interesting article - not so much for what it says about the Blackberry Storm, as it does about how people will attempt to persuade themselves in either direction that the phone they have chosen to aspire to _is_ the right phone for them.
In fact, for core Blackberry users, none of these, with the exception of cut and paste, are particularly strong reasons to choose the Blackberry. Very few business users have a need for recording video (and, in any case, the video that comes out of smartphones is YouTube quality, not business quality), and, equally, very few will notice the difference between a 2 and a 3.2 MP camera — except that a 3.2 MP camera is intrinsically noisier, because the pixels are smaller. Most current Blackberry users do not carry a spare battery around with them. The only times I ever opened the battery compartment in my Blackberry was to remove it as the only way of giving the device a 'hard reset'. The Expandable memory, which can only go as large as the iPhone, and for more money, is also not a benefit. Once again, most users of microSD media have found that juggling cards is not something they want to do.
Since tethering is shortly coming to the iPhone (according to AT&T), the tethered modem is not an advantage. Finally, the touch screen tactile feedback may be better, or it may not be. It won't be until we see the failure rate on Blackberry screens that we will know.
The fundamental reason to pick the Blackberry remains the same: it is already embedded in many enterprises, and works better with Exchange than the iPhone does. This surely must be the buying point for most current Blackberry users. The additional sub-iPhone features surely are not.

articles just keep on getting worse. Why isn't there a comparison of the tech specs or at least have them listed????

Michael Staub Sun, 2008-11-16 10:08

In your article, you mention that the Storm lacks a full QWERTY keyboard; in fact, when you rotate the device, a full keyboard appears on the screen.

For me, it all comes down to the network. I am 37, married with 3 kids, and I am a stay-at-home mom. 4 years ago, we ditched our land line, so my mobile phone is my only phone. I have been extremely satisfied with my Verizon service all these years - it works in my house, it works in my car, it works in all the cities we visit to see family, it works in all the US spots where we vacation.

AT&T? My friend a couple of blocks away has an iphone - she can't talk to me from her house, because AT&T can't maintain the connection. In my house, she utilizes my wi-fi connection.

I really want a phone that can get my email. Facebook & some web browsing would be great, so I can get a few things done while running kids around to various activities. The ability to carry around a digital grocery list...

My problem? My home computer - a MacBook I absolutely love. I was really hoping the Storm would be my solution, but I just found out it works only with PCs right now. Argh.

So until iphones are sold on the Verizon network - or until SOMEONE realizes that even people with macs buy non-apple products - I guess I am just out of luck.

I use my Blackberry on my Macbook. Just download the software you need to make it compatable. It's called Pocket Mac and is a free download. Google it! I'll be at Verzon after work on Friday to get it. I love the Iphone but as pretty eye candy as it is, I too get disconnected from my sister when she is using it from her house less than a mile from me. The Verizon network is just more reliable. I love the iphone games, but I'll just get a ipod touch and use that for games.

Anonymous Mon, 2008-11-17 03:55

I don't own or use either, but who said iPhone doesn't capture videos? With new applications and gadgets you can do almost anything with iPhone. My roommate has one, even its not 3G, he films videos every time.

David Peterson Mon, 2008-11-17 11:13

You mention in this article that the Storm comes with 1GB memory, and that the iPhone might be better because it comes with 8 or 16gb. Verizon is putting an 8gb memory card in the box, so this reasoning would seem to be a bit faulty.

Anonymous Mon, 2008-11-17 11:18

I can't believe this article failed to mention another VERY important issue for many people, and that's the fact that the iPhone cannot do multimedia messaging (MMS), something that the Storm (and roughly 90% of the other phones on the market for the past 5 years) can do. Basically you can't take a picture and text message it directly to another phone from the iphone. They only option on iphone is to take a picture and email it to someone.

Undecided Mon, 2008-11-17 12:18

I do not have either device (yet) and read all things written about these two devices. The most important reason to choose one over the other for many people is the service provider. Although the iPhone functionality is wickedly cool, it is frustrating that it's only availble with AT&T. The less-than-diehard Apple fans will choose Storm in order to honor contracts or because we simply do not wish to switch service providers.

Still Undecided!!! Mon, 2008-11-17 18:19

I purchased three iPhone 3Gs (wife and two daughters). So far, the only complaints they have is the battery life. They haven't had any problems with dropped calls or 'dead-spots'. I'm looking at the Storm for myself because I really need full 'Microsoft Exchange' support. Not just a little compatibility offered by the iPhone. If it wasn't for that, I'd probably have one by now. If the iPhone allowed battery swapping, and added a few more 'business' functions to the email support, it would corner the market! Also, that 'click-screen' thing on the Storm sounds like it's going to be a support nightmare! The fewer moving parts a phone has, the better! The reason the iPhone is so strong is because Apple follows the 'KISS' rule (Keep It Simple Stupid)!
