On Monday, Meru Networks announced virtual ports, a technology designed to make Wi-Fi networks as reliable as wired Ethernet. IDG News Service interviewed the CEO of Meru, Ihab Abu-Hakima, on a visit to London.

Let's bring all the details to light since the reporter's doing nothing more than acting as a PR mouthpiece for the company...
1) Meru's single channel architecture does NOT work with .11n bonded channels (speaking as a direct and unhappy user)
2) Frequency is precious, I would agree, but Meru's system doesn't even use what's available. There are 24 channels allocated by the FCC, MERU USES ONE!
3) APs are a shared resource and no matter what magic anyone attributes to their technology, ONLY ONE PERSON CAN COMMUNICATE AT ONE TIME. The virtual port story is only amazing marketing spin, the reality is just more granular QoS.
4) more on the last sentence of the last point....MERU IS SELLING WIRELESS ATM! Fair sharing of limited bandwidth is a stop gap only, the solution everyone should be demanding is to light up all available bandwidth.
If 1Gbs or 10Gbs wired Ethernet existed when market managers were selling us ATM, they would have been laughted out of any meeting.
There's no excuse for buying into this message outside of ignorance. And now you know.
