Today you can't do a live migration of a virtual machine from an AMD-based physical server to an Intel-based server, or vice versa. Open source technology from Red Hat has helped AMD correct that big management headache, the two companies say.
Though this mapping can theoretically be done and individual points can be achieved; the assumption that a whole-scale dynamic reappropriation path between different architectures is still far from reality.
AMD has yet to demonstrate an ability and limitations in migration between the generations and system manufacturers of it's own processors. The fundamentals still exist, change the "features", the hypervisor now needs to know and manage workloads between the older processor and the newer one with new features. The basic solution is to be able to recognize the difference, and determine based on the workload, what machine and to what level {e.g. full sessions or individual tasks} this can be migrated.
Now, as VMware has shown in the spring VMworld conference, one can default to the lowest common resource appropriation (eg. BIOS & OS assignments). That ability within hardware migration emphasizes the problem.
So before making universal claims like the article implies, fix the fundamental architectural issues to allow virtualization to keep up with the hardware technology shifts. These point solutions only solve 1 instance, with no path to consistently solve the technology tracking problem.
Simple litmus test, will the migration capabilities allow movement from the various steppings of Opterons to Barcelona's to Shanghai's? especially with the BIOS workarounds between different steppings? What does the hypervisor do when the "features" that you wanted to use on Barcelona isn't on that older Opteron system you had? or do you make each image look like it's driving a dual core opteron?
