6 Scripting Languages Your Developers Wish You'd Let Them Use

Several up-and-coming scripting languages--some open-source--are gaining popularity among software developers. These dynamic programming languages, including Groovy, Scala, Lua, F#, Clojure and Boo, deserve more attention for your enterprise software development, even if your shop is dedicated to Java or .NET. Here's why.

LoseThos has the ultimate scripting language. See demo video's. LoseThos

reminded me of this 'Whole Platform'.

http://whole.sourceforge.net/

i was intrigued after watching the screenshot videos on that site.

I'd like to use languages that combine text and graphics.

why is a picture is worth a thousand words?

nobody reads big thick paragraphs anymore because scanning lines is repetitive and dull.

i want to get to the point and make connections graphically.

Scala is not a scripting language. The defining property of a scripting language is a dynamic type system. Neither scala, f# nor boo have a dynamic type system. They are just application programming languages with a proper static type system that use type inference to be more concise.

Mentioning F# and Boo, but not Common Lisp and Scheme?

Get serious...

Hi,

Just a slight clarification on our use of Scala and Ruby. We're not reducing our use of Ruby. We still continue to use it happily and find it a good fit for many things. We're primarily using Scala for cases where we need high performance code and would otherwise have considered writing it in Java. Were it solely up to me I'd probably tend to use a little more Scala than we do, but I certainly wouldn't cut out our use of Ruby.

Seriously - No mention of PowerShell? You need to get out more.

I disagree with Anonymous, scripting language isn't synonymous with dynamic typing.

Wikipedia defines them as "control[ing] a software application". That's probably right (by the origin), but programmers often use the word as a synonym of "interpreted" language (most of embed languages are interpreted anyway), or even "language were we can write quick, throw-away scripts".

And I am amused by the reactions of the commenters, we will have a long list of forgotten languages... (Common Lisp and Scheme can hardly be described as "new and rising", anyway.)

Languages I found interesting, although I haven't used them yet are Fan, which can be translated both in JVM and .Net bytecode, and haXe, which can be converted into JS, AS, PHP or its own VM bytecode...

Mike Heath Tue, 2008-10-14 11:07

@Anonymous: The defining attribute of a scripting language is NOT dynamic typing. You can have a compiled language that has dynamic typing. You can also have a scripting language with static types. The defining attribute of a scripting language is that it does not have to be explicitly compiled to execute.

Scala and F# are still not a scripting languages by any sense. Scala must be compiled to Java byte code and F# gets compiled to CIL.

Awesome to see REBOL mentioned in this article! REBOL is dead simple to get started with and highly productive. I keep the REBOL command line open on my desktop all day. You can download the tiny 200Kb interpreter and be up and running in as little as 2 minutes.

Stilgar Tue, 2008-10-14 16:48

Scala, F# and Boo are not scripting languages but people tend to think so because you do not write types. However these languages belong to this article because these are in fact languages that we, developers, would like to be allowed to use.
