Enterprises continue to pay too much for security software -- while the software vendors aren't doing enough research to keep up with fast-changing threats on the Internet, a Gartner analyst said Monday.
As a software security vendor that offers computer protection products, I believe the enterprise should take ROI implication of this article very seriously.
Most of this is due to the plummeting effectiveness of signature-based malware detection technology. Further, those vendors, so long wed to signature-based detection, have added other detection features that suffer from the same fundamental impasse: blacklisting. Virus definitions represent a black list, or a 'most wanted list', limiting detection to what has been encountered before.
The cyber criminals have nearly finished evolving beyond this defense. They create new malware code every 10 minutes, and for each new one, they cease using it after 48 hours. All this is to avoid their attack code ending up on a 'most wanted list'. As a result, a typical PC with an up-to-date anti-virus/spyware security software product faces less than a 50-50 chance of stopping an attack from this NEW malware. Cyveillance measured an average rate of 29% among leading products, down from last year's 45%. This downward trend is the result of more and more cyber criminals implementing the tactics mentioned above, using automation tools.
As for the other detection features, they are a variant on the black list approach.
So, why does a vendor in this field agree with this article? Because we took a radically different approach. As this post is already quite long, I'll drop some links:
