Google Chrome: A Hit with Online Software Vendors

In some respects Chrome seems to be built like an operating system.
So, suppose you build a laptop with 20 or 30GB of non-volatile random access memory and no HDD.
Preload it with Chrome and a thin "basic operating system" layer to talk to the BIOS and handle things like local printing, networking and wi-fi.
Then use it exclusively for Cloud computing to Googles data centres.
You wouldn't need Microsoft would you? And the laptop would run for hours.

While Google Apps isn't quite on par with Microsoft Office in terms of numbers of users, there are over 1 million Google Apps users out there and that number is growing daily. Chrome is one (small) step towards bringing cloud computing and software-as-a-service (Saas) into the mainstream.
Google offers an online video called Google Apps: Quick Tour, to introduce key concepts and ease the transition from traditional desktop apps to apps "in the cloud". I found it very helpful.

When web companies like Google have all your data and all your applications on their servers, having then wiped out traditional computers and personal control of your data, they can charge you anything they want and users will have no recourse but to pay. Once your data is on the web, all privacy will be gone too. Think about it! Who's looking at your data now?
