There are lots of services for people who need to share documents across different networks, some of which are pretty cool. But I was trying to give very quick pointer, not an exhaustive overview. (An overview might be nice, though... hmmm, I'll scribble that into my Ideas list.)

Most people (busines folks & students)today are internet-connected but with no VPN access to corporate. I was expecting your article would mention more convenient file-collaboration SAAS applications such as sharepoint server, Microsoft's Live whatever and even Gmail's business appliance. What you have described in your article is too basic to be listed in a CIO magazine column very basic and I am confident that 99% of network-connected users already use this method to share files. What we need is a recommendation for a secure, available-always, non-VPN, web-enabled solution - preferably a SAAS solution.

Sharing = Real-time connection. This equation is assumed in the minds of most who seek ways to share MS Office apps.
