Seems like VMware is taking their eye off of the ball in terms of the platform. They must be distracted thinking of all the ways Microsoft will erode their foothold in the market. I'm surprised the stock didn't take a hit.
A simple mistake - that's all it was.
A simple mistake, probably by a relatively junior developer that got overlooked by the development manager, that slipped past the testing engineer, that slid through the QA department.
A simple mistake that will - undoubtedly - cost VMware some credibility points...that they'll be hearing about for a long time to come.
A simple mistake that has been made by many other companies (remember viruses on distribution CDs?), but that none the less should not have been allowed out the door.
A simple mistake that - I'm sure - will cost at least one person their job, and likely cut significantly into several people's bonuses. It's that last aspect of this whole thing that will help to ensure that this type of mistake doesn't happen in the future.
As long as companies don't start blaming all their lost revenue on VMware or any other company without first thinking about the risk involved when using software written by a third party that doesn't understand your business.
