The market for heterogeneous virtualization management is heating up, experts say. How's VMware going to play it?
Don't you think that Citrix and Microsoft have to manage VMware as well as their own products - they are the underdogs with little to no marketshare??
Their path to successful adoption of their products is to live side by side with VMware and try and get converts.
When Exchange competed with Lotus Notes, they didn't have Management tools for Lotus - but when Windows NT competed with Novell - there was a whole bunch of strange tools like CSNW and GSNW, etc that promoted interoperability and integration but ultimately led to alot of migrations.
Yuen said it best that the management tools are to "get customers to convert to Hyper-V".
We have seen Microsoft in this fight before, Citrix didn't really beat anyone up to dominate in the thin client space - they sort of created it and owned it but did manage to hold off MSFT and Terminal services.
And I think its two battles - the Server Workload and the Desktop Workload - its not just a Vitualization Workload (so keep an eye on Moka5 and Desktone) and don't forget IBM with paravirtualization and/or Application Virtualization and while we are at it - Storage Virtualization with folks like 3Par, XIV, etc.
This is just one more step in proving my point that VMware has an arrogance and egotistic issue. They are the 900-pound gorilla in the room but yet they aren't willing to "validate the existence of competitors"? They own this market and have a commanding lead, why not provide that capability if not just to give some more value to the customer. What happened to that concept?
