On-demand apps and services have several security risks that IT should address up front.
IT security standards really must catch up! In fact in so many organizations I go to, they haven't even fully implemented 17799. Cloud is a big opportunity but also a big, big risk if organizations don't wise up to the risks.
I comment about this on my blog. Cloud might bring lots of cash savings but cost more in the long run! - take a sneak peak at an article coming out next week here: http://www.simonstapleton.com/wordpress/2008/07/15/can-you-afford-the-cloud/
There are three main areas associated with service risks that companies need to address: 1. Security associated with access and data, 2. Redundancy of systems for high availability, and 3. Connectivity risks associated with accessing Cloud based services.
At IVDesk (www.ivdesk.com) we've been providing cloud computing solutions for the last 8 years and have completly addressed the above issues. This has been done by going through security and access audits regularly, creating an N+1 failover environment, and utilizing dual+ connectivity to our clients business locations. Connectivity has been significantly increased as well by utilizing CISCO's HSRP to provide failover connectivity solutions.
Great access to "pay for use" services dramatically increase our successes with out customers. It's a great solution that IS available now!
