Sorry to see so many IT executives mis-informed and close minded. What's with the hacking comment Lee? First you want it secure. Then you want to be able to install or do anything with it.
Windows Mobile 6 is as big of a joke as Vista. And Apple Products EXPENSIVE to own because you can't crack open a laptop under warranty?
Switching to Apple desktops has reduced our overall IT desktop overhead by 52% thank you very much. And who would be ridiculous enough to get tied into that money pit they call SharePoint? Sounds like you backed the wrong horse and want to go down with the sinking ship.
I, for one, will not. And I suspect a wave of other IT groups will become less tied to any one platform.
I agree with the first comment. It seems like IT is still so driven by Microsoft applications and windows-based tools. All of the comments about synching calendars and contacts and seeing who is and isn't available, etc. etc. etc. would be joyfully seamless on a mac.
It's funny that almost any company who runs Apple machines in their business now will have no hesitation with using iPhones as their corporate smartphone. In fact, most do already. And it's not because they look better or have the "cool" factor... it's because everything actually works together.
"And though Windows Mobile 6.0 users can access and login into Sharepoint using their Internet Explorer Mobile browsers, Davis says he's never been able to do so with his BlackBerry's browser"
Blackberry devices can view internal Sharepoint sites, but the administrators of Sharepoint and the Blackberry server need to configure it properly to allow it. This is not an intrinsic drawback of Blackberry devices; it is either an organizational decision to not support that kind of access or a simple lack of knowledge within the IT staff to support it properly.
Great article.
I think the Exchange intergration is the biggest deal for us. I would love to see a major improvement with this.
The replacement/extra battery issue is a great point I never thought about. This is coming from someone whose iPods battery just died and I am looking at having to just buy a new iPod rather than just replace the battery. I have always thought this was a very stupid idea from Apple.
Are there any published case studies or the like of any large, commercial organizations (save for Apple) that have successfully implemented the iPhone as a standardized mobile device for the enterprise?
Apple's going to need to hire some good enterprise sales and marketing people. So far, they haven't focused on this market very aggressively. I am seeing more and more MACs in the enterprise as an alternative to PCs. Microsoft and RIMM still own this space.
What about running business windows apps securely on the iPhone. Will this make the 3G iPhone more attractive and accepted in the Enterprise ?

how much are they paying you? Maybe smaller companies are considering this phone as a viable business solution, but in reality, the phone is just consumer electronics. sorry, it's destiny is not the enterprise.
