I recently attended a presentation where the speaker offered to speak on any subtopic anyone from the audience could bring up within the larger subject topic. He successfully did this by using some form of visual tool that allowed him to group multiple documents across a number of disparate categories (re-using most documents multiple times, likely with some form of inherent tagging). It appeared to be a type of mind-mapping software that used linking (Visio-like) to connect documents and categories together. And when he click on a category it moved to center and zoomed out to show more of the detailed sub-categories and documents within (and apparently, this zooming in to sub-sub and lower levels could continue indefinitely).

I was hoping someone might be able to comment on the kinds of mind-mapping software they've tried, since the above looked incredible!
