Treos, BlackBerrys and smart phones don’t have to wreak havoc on enterprise IT. Here’s how to keep users happy, data secure and costs in check.
I have architected and managed mobile device solutions within the automotive sector for a number of years now. It is advantageous for any IT manager or IT executive to develop a strong architecture, deployment and support strategies for mobile devices. As these devices become more robust and dependencies grow, mobile devices will become more of a primary user commuting mechanism the current PCs. With network speeds and WIFI connectivity increasing and greater computing power, these devices can no longer be considered a “gadget” or an email only type device.
The primary issue should be security. Due to the mobility of the device, tighter security controls and administration practices must be in place. Beyond security, IT managers should consider the following process goals when managing mobile devices:
I. Simplify wireless device support :
a. Less complexity due to fewer mobile device types.
b. Defined support structure and process owners.
II. Improved user experience.
III. Establishment of hardware, software and configuration standards for mobile wireless devices.
IV. Lower “Total Cost of Ownership” (TCO) for wireless devices.
V. Consolidation of wireless technologies (i.e., BlackBerrys can replace mobile broadband cards…).
VI. Improve use of existing wireless device technology.
In my experience, the biggest hurdle for managing mobile devices is creating an understanding within the corporation that the technology is much more than a “cool gadget” but another computing platform that requires governance at the same level of the current desktop computers.
