Inside Microsoft’s plan to dominate the Web 2.0 enterprise.
NO NO NO NO NO , the future is Googles and it's fellows , everyone now realises how useless Microsoft's products really are and are dying to leave them behind. The dinosaur has o hope I'm sorry to say and will now pay for the disrespect shown to the users of it's wares. Welcome slim Apple/Linux clients with SSD's and no fans and ultra hi speed wireless.
Software as a service is a great concept, but it can't just happen magically. Managing enterprise users and software requires a massive effort today. Managing those same users and a random assortment of varied service apps hosted online from who-knows-where using who-knows-what platforms will be an equally daunting challenge for medium-size and large companies. Microsoft has hit on a huge opportunity here; the question is whether they can capitalize on it.
I was intrigued by the expectation that web standards would make it easier for MS to pay in the Web 2.0 arena.
MS may have help push standards through the committees but They_Don't_Use_Them
Microsoft tools are far from useless. Google Apps and alike might be the future but only in a home environment and small companies. It's Google Apps and such that are uselless in most companies for being so limited. I've worked in several small and very large companies, and tools like Excel are still widely used and constantly taken to the limit of its capabilities. It is so because of its versatility found in no other software. Data Mining, Operational tasks, Regression Testing, you name it. An equivalent running in a browser will always be significantly inferior in performance and features. It will be a very long time until that changes as still today most large companies have more clients than Excel has rows.
