Losses from shrink (lost, stolen or damaged merchandise) and transaction fraud continue to haunt U.S. retailers dealing with sluggish sales. Can new tools and real-time business intelligence help IT help an industry in trouble?
This is very interesting article for me, which lets me know, in the high-level view, how IT can help prevent the shrinkage. After my reading, I am thinking, except for training, BI, new IT technology, is that possible to make this further and pay a little attention on the business process improvement on it, for example, could we identify which area it is easy to produce the fraud, and how can we improve the current business processes and integrate IT solution to achieve this? during this implementation, how to ensure the employed business processes and IT solution is useful without impairing customer shopping experience and business operation effeciency. That could make this point better. Thanks.
grocery checkers not scanning some items - some possible solutions
1 - have scanners that read objects at a greater distance, so it will be much harder to move an item from the belt to the sacking area without the scanner seeing it.
2 - have RFID chips in the stick-on labels of some non-barcoded items (like fresh fruit and vegetables), with a sensor that would alarm the cashier of an RFID labeled item appeared in the sacking area without a preceding cash register entry to match. These might even be made removable to recycle, like the anti-shoplifting dongles on retail clothing.
