Neterion's new 10GB Ethernet adapters, slated to show up in servers later this year, will deliver targeted I/O bandwidth to resource-hungry applications such as SQL databases that until now haven't been practical to run on virtual machines.

Why do I hear that old "Lost in Space" line going through my head? ("Danger! Danger Will Robinson!")

Seems like Neterion (and their competitors at Nuova, and Xsigo, etc) will be very successful at easing the Virtual Machine's I/O performance bottleneck...

...but doesn't this simply shift the bottleneck back to the servers again?

[Putting more VMs on one machine increases CPU load and failover risk; putting fewer and clustering more hypervisor machines together increases I/O management complexity.]

Either way, seems like the next challenge will be management of the underlying infrastructure, no?
