Dave Duffield and Aneel Bhusri sold a lot of ERP systems over the years. In an interview, the duo discuss why their new company is pushing on-demand ERP and why they're dissing the on-premise model.
Dave and Aneel's findings are interesting to me in that I am experiencing resistance to the on-demand model more from the business side. Perhaps this is an issue of familiarity and security.
Like it or not, legacy ERP and its various flavors will/are becoming commodities. In this regard Dave and Aneel are correct - flexibility and the delivery model will become the differentiating factor.
Commoditizing ERP is good for IT. It forces us to focus on our company's core competency and allows us to favorably impact the top and bottom line.
I need our technology partners to show us how they will 1) reduce start-up costs, 2) lower the cost of maintenance, 3) increase our ability to respond to our changing business environment. I fail to see legacy system suppliers responding to this need.
How do you convince customers of the security / confidentiality of data maintained?
Especially this being people information, what are the measures taken from within to build in security (physical / information etc) and what have been the concerns voiced by customers on this front and how have you handled them?
Very interesting topic and it was well explained by Dave and Aneel.
My thought about the attractive shift towards on-demand
1) Though its a core financials and HR product, it might be time for us to think about attracting customers from specific country / industry. This will help to get deeper and win more customer base.
2) Though its on-demand, will the customers be able to configure or customize the product, if required? If not, then we might have to apply our next steps towards these.
3) Will it be a best idea to start showing few advertisements related to ERP / industry / other customers whenever the users uses the product. Just a thought to keep the customer base happy and comparable with others.
