"ERP is connectivity taken to the extreme; and while the program has applications that are important and useful, it also teaches that there are limits. Connectivity is not the solution to all problems."

This is about the most perceptive comment on ERP that I've read recently.
All business data is not accounting data- which must be few,precise and auditable. Business- particularly production data in production-intensive industries such as steel- uses masses of "dirty" data that are imprecise but ubiquitous,voluminous and unbiased. They lend themselves well to statistical analysis. They are also valuable- no business could do withou them.
The impedance mismatch between production and accounting data is an issue which no one has talked about.
