Researchers at Harvard University and BBN Technologies have designed an intriguing wireless network capable of reporting real-time sensor data across an entire city, Cambridge, Mass. Scientists will initially use the CitySense network to monitor urban weather and pollution. The network could eventually provide better public wireless Internet access.

My company, Vaisala Inc, is a world leader in providing weather monitoring instrumention. Our US offices are located in Woburn, MA, and we offer compact/integrated weather sensor packages already used in networks.

What purpose will this serve other than to cost tax payers more money as a result of consuming electricity at already skyrocketing cost?
No one can predict the weather no matter how hard they try, it is no more than a guessing game. Why does everyone want to play God?

Part of the promise of this network is it's low power use which will not add much expense to existing power use and costs. In fact, it could help save a lot of money in ease of communication and services that can be provided to the community. The idea of a wireless mesh network is one of the most difficult technologies to implement but once that is done the ability to add additional services such as transmitting audio and video over short distances with low powered devices provides numerours opportunities for other applications to include:
***Creating Wi-Fi access points for a true freely available wireless network
***Provide notification access points for emergency services. Sudden rise in temperatures or the sounds of gunshots could automatically connect to emergency services for their review and response as necessary.
***Wireless Educational and learning services could piggy back the infrastructure which could eventually lead to more home schooling and provide an urban environment with some traffic relief.
